Who is your hero?

Who is your hero?

Who is your hero? Who has inspired who you are today?

My personal hero is the late, great Graham Taylor. Not the typical hero for an HR professional, I realise! So, I will tell you why.

He arrived at Watford Football Club in 1977. In taking the club from the old 4th division to 2nd in the top division, in to Europe, & the FA Cup final at Wembley in 1984, he inspired me. Firstly, to be a football fan and a Watford fan in particular, something I still am today. But also in so many other ways beyond football.....

  • belief that you can achieve the impossible. Life comes with set backs (letting in goals or losing games) but you just keep going, you will achieve. - inclusion of all for their skills, irrespective of their background

  • respect for everyone, doing the right thing (ethically and morally) even if that means you're unpopular

  • community involvement with Watford leading the way in this. I use my HR skills both in paid work and on a voluntary basis, if you've got talent it is important to use it for all.

  • teamwork as the team has often achieved more as a whole than the individual players might have suggested, useful to remember that we are better working together for the same goals.

  • yellow is an amazing colour, especially when there's a lot of it :-)
