AI in HR - a threat, a challenge or an opportunity?
We’re surrounded by technology and, to some extent, artificial intelligence (AI) in our everyday lives. And some of the machine learning now being developed is starting to outstrip the Sci-Fi predictions of the past…..toaster controlled by Alexa???
So it is inevitable that AI will be a part of the future of HR. Do you see this as a threat, a challenge or an opportunity?
Do you see AI as a threat, with machines getting so clever they will take over all our jobs and, eventually, the world? Perhaps you’ve seen some of the industries or tasks that have been automated and worried about what next? This is totally understandable, just a few short years ago, there’s no way we could have all accessed our work remotely in a lockdown….working from home used to take planning, download the right documents you need to a usb stick, take the right paper files and so on. Now we can seemingly access everything from everywhere!
Maybe you’re happy that your job won’t be taken over by robots any time soon but see technology and AI as a challenge? You don’t understand it, you can’t work it and you find the whole thing just too much? All totally understandable, particularly if you’ve never really had to use more than, say, email and word processing in your role. Now you’re being asked to log your annual leave via self service, find policy information on the intranet, and speak to a chatbot when you need advice from your bank!
Integration of AI, delivery of HR data analytics and use of digital technology are seen as essential skills for the future of HR….a potential opportunity! If you can see past the potential threat and overcome the challenge of learning new skills, the progress of AI in our HR world is definitely an opportunity. Whilst AI may replace some HR work, it is likely to be the mundane, repetitive, HR admin work that is replaced, giving us the opportunity to upskill our teams and deliver more of the value-add HR our organisations so need. And that is the greatest opportunity from AI :-)
